A rare and unusual dining set for the British market, this statement suite was designed by Jan Kuypers for Imperial Furniture, Canada in the 1950s.
Kuypers, a Dutch designer, was recruited by Imperial in 1951 as chief designer and went on to revolutionise Canadian furniture production notably in the processes to innovate mass manufacture. Between 1953 and 55, he won an impressive 25 National Industrial Design Council awards. Kuypers studied in The Hague before moving to Glasgow. It was there he read an advert for Imperial Furniture and applied for the role at age 26.
Kuyper's furniture is predominantly made in birch, this beautiful set being no exception. An early 50s design, labelled Imperial Loyalist, has Dutch brutalist leanings in the wide angular chair legs blended with Scandinavian modern design in the elegant table with extending pull and out leaves. The mechanism for the leaves is simple and beautifully designed, a handle under each leaf allows them to be dropped down, glide out then lift up to slot seamlessly into the top.
The set was originally stained in a dark red matt lacquer finish. This has been stripped back and refinished in a light stain lacquer to reveal the beauty of the original birch.
A standout set for the modern interior that will not fail to arouse interest. This fabulous, quality mid century dining set is an investment buy, rare to find in today's British market.
