This is an example of one of John Drummond's more classical pieces. Perhaps it was inspired by his time in Italy on a bursary from the Royal Society of Arts? Baiae was an ancient Roman luxury beach resort, along the Neapolitan coastline, lost to the sea and abandoned over time. A place known for its hedonism and splendours. Its mystery has inspired poets, writers and artists for centuries.
Born in County Antrim, Northern Ireland in 1920, John Drummond gained international acclaim as a prolific artist, designer, printmaker. His more recent art seems to have been watercolour based, with exhibitions here and in the US.
Following the Second World War, during which he served with the RAF in India, Drummond studied Printed Textiles at Central School of Arts and Crafts (later merged with Central St. Martins). In the Fifties he opened his own studio and also taught at various London institutions before becoming a senior tutor at the Royal College of Art (in 1968 he was made an Honorary Fellow at the RCA).
In addition to his work for Hull Traders, Drummond's artwork and designs have spanned too many companies and commissions to list here but included Heals, Sanderson, David Whitehead, Cole & Son, and Philip Graf.
Hull Traders was founded in Willesden, London in 1957 by Tristram Hull in partnership with Stanley Coren. Initially they hosted trade events where they showcased British design and craft, especially works created by fresh talent, before the company went on to specialise in textiles.
