A. H. McIntosh was founded in 1869 in Kirkcaldy, Scotland by Alexander Henry McIntosh. The company quickly gained traction both in Britain and overseas, promoting its high quality furniture in Europe and as far afield as Australia. After becoming one of the post World War II leading lights in British furniture manufacture their popularity dwindled in the late 1970s but the company sallied forth and, under the ESA McIntosh name, still produce furniture, albeit specifically for schools and educational settings.

Today, McIntosh collectors seek out furniture from the firm's heyday, the 1950s to the mid 1970s, with particular interest in their sleek 1960's Mid Century Modern pieces, inspired by Tom Robertson and Val Rossi's appreciation of Scandinavian design.
