1960s Frantisek Vizner Green Whirlpool Bud Vase

1 item left

Highly collectible 1960's green Czech glass bud vase by František Vízner.

A stunning piece of Mid Century art glass with internal whirlpool bubble effect.

Created by hand, the beauty of this piece cannot be overstated. The smoothness of the exterior is a calm contrast to the chaos of the inside, which reflects the light in such a way as to make the glass glow. You almost forget this serves a functional role.

František Vizner (1936-2011) studied at specialist glassmaking schools in Nový Bor and Železný Brod, Czechoslovakia before graduating in 1962 from Prague's Academy of Applied Arts under Professor Karel Štipl. He was first employed as a glass designer at Sklo Union in Teplice before working with hot-shaped art glass at the Centre of Arts and Crafts Glassworks in Škrdlovice.

In 1975 he left the Czech glass industry to pursue a successful career as an independent artist, specialising in cut studio glass.

Czech glass is amongst the finest in the world and post-war artists like Vizner, who were influenced by the clean lines of Modernism and new pathways of experimentation, took it to another level. His cut glass bowls are exceptional.

Vizner's work was shown in exhibitions around the world and today is held in major museums, including Prague's Museum of Applied Craft, MoMA New York and London's V&A.

A rare opportunity to acquire a piece of studio glass by one of the top glass artists from the 20th Century.
