'Five' Screen Print by Shirley Craven for Hull Traders 1967.
Such an impactful and fun design, Five was hand printed by Shirley Craven and went on to achieve many accolades, including the COID Design Centre Award in 1968. Like many of her designs, this was produced freehand from original sketches with pigment dyes and hand screen printed in limited runs. Five came in four colourways, on cotton and linen.
Craven earned an international reputation for her bold, abstract style and was regarded as exciting and unconventional. She was particularly skilled at being able to translate her artistic works into large scale pattern layouts and repeats. She was inspired by the world around her, with music and the natural landscape playing an important role and was able to produce fluid work spontaneously, as is evident with Five. Because of this, her designs work well as smaller pieces of art in their own right, despite being originally produced for large scale commercial settings.
Five is one of our favourites because of its playful colours and abstract, spontaneous nature. A true statement piece for home interiors. The perfect Mid Century British art textile for livening up a space with vibrancy and colour. Also a collector's piece that will be enjoyed for many years to come.
