This colourful and stylish vase has a lobe base and an overall shape that makes this a very tactile and beautifully curvaceous piece.
As seen in the 1957 Whitefriars catalogue.
Manufacturer: (Whitefriars) James Powell & Sons
Model: 9411
Dimensions: H:15cm
Condition: Original vintage condition.
Details: Whitefriars Glassworks was bought in 1834 by James Powell (although the glass factory on which it stood opened circa 1720). The firm was known as Whitefriars Glass: James Powell & Sons of London (the Powell name was dropped much later) and closed in the 1980s. Initially creating and supplying beautiful stained glass for churches, the firm went onto become known for its associations with designers including William Morris, producing Art Nouveau and Art and Crafts art glass and tableware.
During the mid twentieth century, Whitefriars became a leading light in contemporary glass designs and is much coveted by today's collectors for its Modernist creations, most notably by Geoffrey Baxter and William Wilson.
