1960s Teak, Rosewood and Chrome Sideboard with integrated bar by Wrighton Furniture

This fabulous sideboard was designed and manufactured by one of our favourite British furniture manufacturers of the 20th century, Wrighton Furniture.

Although Wrighton furniture is mostly recognised today for its iconic kitchen designs, we have always been impressed by its daring approach to working with innovative engineering and manufacturing processes and materials, creating many idiosyncratic living room and bedroom pieces.

Such designs blended coloured laminates with wood, modernist mirror and glass shapes, unusual bentwood leg frames and so on.  These were often designs that must have attracted niche markets, unlike many of the competitor mass-produced ranges that burgeoned during this period. These pieces stand out nowadays for their unique attributes.  All the while, Wrighton continued to produce large quantities of furniture that attracted the more traditional buyer, never swaying from its commercial needs.

Aesthetically from the outside, the shape of this sideboard is typically mid-century; simple lines and a tapered leg frame.  Its unique features lay beneath the original dark stained lacquer finish in the stunning blend of woods - Rosewood, Zebrano Teak and Teak.  The Teak draws the eye from side to side through the striped grain while the swirled Rosewood grain of the cupboard doors draws our eyes up and down the piece  The elegant, slimline Chrome handles also accentuate the horizontal lines of the teak.

In typical Wrighton form, the integrated bar in the cabinet on the left-hand side showcases its creative play with modern innovation.  Open the door to reveal three in-built curved laminate shelves with chrome edging, crowned with a clear glass pouring station at perfect hip height.  As the door opens out, the recessed bottle shelf glides forward.  The only effort required for this funky minibar is in keeping it stocked.

The sideboard also includes three centre drawers.  The top drawer has a centre divider and is lined in royal blue suede.  On the right hand side is a cupboard with removable shelf.

Sideboards like this don't come around very often, especially in such excellent condition.  A British mid-century sideboard with a twist.
